Forget Not

“Oh, Lord, please help me get there on time!”, I prayed aloud as I sped along the city streets to get home.

My firstborn son, in kindergarten, was due to be dropped off. Daniel was a shy, anxious child. I knew if I was not home to greet him, it would cause him stress. The moment I arrived, the phone rang. Daniel was still on the bus, but I could catch it at the next school pick-up. When I arrived, the sweet little face of my boy, tear-stained and crestfallen, greeted me.

“You forgot me, Mom!”

Yup, I lost the ‘Mom of the Year’ award that day, and my heart broke.

When my dad was in his early 80s, he asked his wife, “Do you think the grandkids will remember me?”

Reverend Timothy Keller, a well-known pastor, author and speaker, when asked if he had any concerns about dying answered, “No.” After a brief pause, he added, “I hope my grandkids remember me.”

Do you feel forgotten, forsaken, or left behind? Are you afraid you will never see the dear ones you have lost?

It is in our human nature to long to be remembered. It is what God created us for; eternal relationship and community.

We also long to remember, and see again, those we have lost through war, disease, accidents or old age.

C.S. Lewis said, “To be in hell is to be eternally and totally forgotten.”

Christ came for these very reasons. On the cross, the Father intentionally forgot Him, so now we don’t have to be. He died so we could have new and eternal life with Him now and later in Heaven with our loved ones.

The One who had never known separation from the Father and Holy Spirit experienced this loss of relationship for us. On the cross, Christ cried out,

“My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”

Mark 15:34 NKJV

When our faith and hope is in Jesus, God has promised to never forget or forsake us because Christ was.

Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.

Isaiah 49: 15-16 NIV

Christ purposely and determinedly walked toward Jerusalem and the cross so He could have your name engraved on the palms of His hands. Now, once again lifted up, glorified and restored to oneness in the Trinity, Jesus stands before God and displays those scarred hands with your name on them.

Sisters, remember the LORD sees you, no matter the circumstances. He knows you, no matter how you feel. You are deeply and sacrificially loved by the only One that matters. Don’t let anyone or anything tell you differently!

Forget not that He was forgotten, so we can always be remembered. Then rejoice!

Be well!

Patricia
