Precious

It was a deliciously quiet and restive moment of reading in our usually hectic week when my husband and I were startled by a loud bang. Swivelling our necks in unison toward the row of family room windows, we saw a small object drop to the ground. Birds often fly into our large living room window upstairs and we assumed this was the case. Raising myself to get a better view, I saw a small bird, unusually striking blue and lying motionless.

Rushing outside to see if I could help, I quickly assessed it had a broken neck. My heart grieved at the sight because it was striking in its beauty and, we had never seen one before. Slipping my hands into garden gloves, I lifted its fragile broken body, admiring the remarkable combination of turquoise, cobalt and dark blues.

As I gazed at this rare sight, I recalled what I had read in my devotional a few days before.

Not long ago I saw a little bird lying still and cold on the ground. I thought to myself, ‘I barely missed seeing God, for He has just been here to a funeral.’

from Streams in the Desert vol. two, by Mrs. Charles E. Cowman, March 21

The author had taken this idea from Matthew 10:29 NIV

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.”

I felt God’s presence and knew He grieved with me over the death of His stunning creation.

God is not distant and unaware of what His children go through. He cradles us in His hands, just as I did that little bird. He weeps with us (John 11:35), groans with us (Romans 8:26), and has compassion on us (Luke 7:13).

Our Lord knows what we feel because He experienced it Himself. Whether it is the death of a tiny bird or a precious loved one, He understands and is present, weeps with us as He did over Lazarus. If we are grieving over a prodigal child, the Lord groans on our behalf. When we are afraid, alone and feeling hopeless, He stops to comfort us and whispers, “Do not weep.” because there is hope and help in His loving, constant presence.

There is no experience we go through without our God if we are His child.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

We are precious in the sight of God. He knows the number of hairs on our head (Luke 12:7), when we sit or rise, our DNA (Psalm 139:2, 13), and our hearts and minds (Jeremiah 17:10a).

He created and formed us to be just the way we are, who we are, exactly as He lovingly created that stunning blue bird. And just as He knew the precise moment that small, insignificant bird would fall, He knows every step we take and about each heartache, temptation, and struggle we deal with.

He is present, waiting for us to acknowledge that presence, share our hearts with Him, talk to Him and look to Him for our strength and help. He longs to be in a relationship with us.

Is not this what we desire? To be known, precious, and loved, just the way we are?

Sisters, we ARE precious, beloved daughters of the King!

Let us remind each other of this often. Encourage one another to remember our Father is present, aware and for us.

Be well!

Patricia

  1. Gorgeous! Both the bird and your words of encouragement!
I am in Calgary but will look up the name of that bird when I get home next week. I have not seen one like it at my bird feeders either.
    Blessings to you,
