I love the changing seasons. They each provide unique beauty and gifts.
Fall spreads a change of colour to the trees and plants. Some shout their beauty, while others remain muted. Without the one, however, the other becomes mundane. Pewter skies and cooler air bring an appreciation for the rarer days of blue, and the sun’s warm breath on my lifted my face, soaking it in. Woodstove aroma, scuttling leaves and cozy sweaters turn our thoughts to home.
Winter, in the northern hemisphere, drifts in a million individual snowflakes and ice. A strange, peaceful quiet blankets our world because of it. Frosty air chills our noses, fingers and toes, so hot drinks, warm blankets and fireplaces feel exquisite. Skating, sledding, snowman building and tree decorating cause squeals of laughter and a sense of freedom and joy.
Spring brings new life popping up from the ground and on the trees. Crocuses are a promise of more beauty to come. Birds and squirrels chitter with renewed energy, which is contagious. There is a sense of hope and excitement in the warming air. Raindrops turn straw-coloured grass green and bring delight to curling up with a book. Tulips, warmer air, and longer days draw us out to play and put a bounce in our steps.
Summer comes with its steamy caresses and when we linger too long in it, refreshing dips in cool waters. An explosion of scents and bustling activity is mixed with lazy days on the beach or poolside. Beautiful flowers in full bloom, barbecues tantalizing our olfactory senses, and lush fresh fruit to nibble on. It fuels our desire to experience life to the fullest while we can.
Seasons remind us that change is inevitable but good. I, for one, struggle with change. When I was younger, it seemed exciting. These days I am often fearful. Perhaps it is because I have less energy and less time. I believe the problem is more of a lack of trust. Skepticism has wormed its way into my thinking.
The earth’s seasons change. My seasons change. Your seasons change.
The LORD stays the same.
Of old You laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.
They will perish, but You will endure;
Yes, they will all grow old like a garment;
Like a cloak You will change them,
And they will be changed.
But you are the same,
And Your years will have no end.
Psalm 102 : 25-27 NKJV
Although change on earth is inevitable, for good or bad, the Lord is steadfast in His promises and His love. He promised to be with us and change us inside, making us more like Jesus. Our seasons change, but He is always at work teaching us new things about Him and about ourselves.
What season are you in right now?
The freshness of youth?
The fullness of young adulthood?
The change of middle age?
Or the quiet of senior years?
No matter where you are, He is there, waiting patiently to help you and change you into someone glorious. His image bearer.
And that, Sisters, is a change we can be excited about and find joy in! So, look for the Lord’s purpose in whatever season you are in and open your hearts to the change He is working in you. It may not be easy or even enjoyable in the middle of it, but trust Him, and you will experience a fullness of gratitude and joy for His amazing grace.
Be well!
Patricia
