What About Saturday?

Friday was filled with betrayal, tragedy, brutality, and horror.

Today is Saturday, the Sabbath.

Sabbath represents rest, peace, and praising the LORD for His sovereignty and salvation.

But where was Mary’s peace after watching her firstborn son be cruelly tortured and murdered?

Where was rest for the minds and hearts of Jesus’s followers?

  • John, who had lost his best friend, mentor, and Master, was now commissioned with the care of Mary, the mother of Jesus.
  • Peter, who wrestles with a burden of regret, failure and deep loss.
  • The other women who had followed, watched and waited, and now sat stunned, in deep shock, from the brutality they had witnessed poured out on their gentle, loving Lord.

How could they praise God when a black cloak of grief wrapped around them like a shroud, like the one Jesus had been wrapped in, their Messiah? Where was God’s power and provision now? Where would their salvation come from?

Yet, in the wings of time stood Sunday, with Hope and Joy waiting, in eager anticipation, to burst upon the scene. Angels hovered close by. Some were waiting for the command to push that stone away and watch in amazement as God’s plan unfolded. Others stood ready to proclaim the good news to those who only felt sorrow and hopelessness.

But living in Saturday is a hard place to be. Confusion, listlessness, tears, heavy sighs, deep, deep heartache, and hopelessness follow us wherever we go. There may be brief moments of joy caught in the sight of a sweet baby’s face, a stunning sunrise or sunset, or the sound of birds, but then the shroud snugs tighter and feels darker.

Yet, Sunday is just around the corner. Hope and Joy are waiting in the wings, and the LORD has not forgotten you or reneged on His promises. He is still in control, He is still with you, and His plan is still for your good.

Because on Friday, He declared, “It is finished!” and on Sunday, the angels and people cried out, “He is risen!”

So, in the middle of your Saturday, hold on and trust the Lord, for He is trustworthy, loving and good, and Sunday is on its way!

Be well!
